I’m not typically one for horror, but this book might just have changed my mind on the genre. If you’re looking for something you won’t want to read with the lights off, that will haunt you long after the last page, and will have you question reality, this is for you. Let’s get into why this is an apt description, shall we?

Synopsis: A horror novel that follows four acclaimed but deeply troubled horror authors who are invited to spend Halloween night in the infamous Finch House, a secluded, long-abandoned mansion with a violent and mysterious past. What begins as a publicity stunt quickly descends into terror as the house reveals a malevolent presence that feeds on fear, regret, and the darkest corners of the human psyche. As the writers confront both supernatural forces and their own inner demons, Kill Creek becomes a chilling exploration of grief, legacy, and the stories we tell to survive, proving that some houses don’t just haunt people; they consume them.

TW: themes of violence, domestic abuse, parental grieving, gore, suspense, and horror are present.

Plot Twists: ****/*****

The plot twists of this book were balanced with both wholly unexpected turns, and other more reasonable twists. All were satisfying and gripping, causing you to question the very reality the writers are living in.

Sexual Content: ***/*****

While some sexual content is present, this is by no means a “spicy” book. There are two main sexual encounters which are described in some brief detail, though the story does not hinge on them, and they can be easily skipped. One of the writers also includes strong sexual themes in their writing, none of which readers explicitly read.

Profanity: ****/*****

The profanity in this book was somewhat heavy. If you strongly dislike characters who aren’t afraid to curse, this story probably isn’t for you.

Character Development: ***/*****

All characters undergo significant personal change throughout the story, which makes for intricate themes and individuals.

Political Agenda: ***/*****

One of the writers is a significantly strong-willed feminist, who often uses her sexuality to make certain points. It didn’t feel like the author was trying to convince you to take on her views, but they are heavily present throughout.

Overall Rating: ***/*****

My Thoughts: Like I said, horror isn’t usually my thing. This book certainly falls into the classic horror genre, with strong supernatural themes. This is where I tend to dislike horror. Because of my personal beliefs, supernatural themes never thrill me.

That said, this book was nonetheless thrilling, exhilarating, and jaw dropping. I spent the last 50 pages of the book with my hand clamped firmly over my mouth. The ending was not as satisfying as I would’ve liked, however, that didn’t make the story any less gripping. All the characters were endearing in their own right, and all worked well within the story.

I finished this a few weeks ago and I’m still trying to make up my mind about whether I loved it or hated it, hence the 3-star review.

If you like horror books, you’ll love this one. If you’re not into the supernatural, maybe pass this time and find another amazing read from some of my other reviews below!
